Just One Page, That’s All It Takes
By Jim Miller
The AIIP 2024 Symposium – the annual conference of the Association of Independent Information Professionals – was quite privileged to have former business reporter Sarah Glova as our Keynote Speaker in St. Louis, MO.
Throughout her career, Sarah has interviewed successful people. She noticed a pattern in how individuals become successful. With a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and a Master of Science in Technical Communication, she is dedicated to cultivating forward-thinking work environments.
Sarah knew her audience and shared additional information, stories, and research relevant to AIIP members. Her keynote provided some valuable insight into how we, as information professionals, can put together a plan for an ambitious goals with just one sheet of paper.
One Sheet of Paper, One Big Goal
Set a really big goal.
Get quite specific about a goal that no one else could claim. Make the goal unique to you, and ensure it is in line with your values and skills.
The world will be a better place if we can reach our goals. Focus on your “deep why”. Have a focused framework.
What are your unique skills? Which of your skills will help? What are you known for?
With the assistance of DJ Jennifer Burke, Sarah took us through an exercise that helped us think about our goals, our skills, and the key elements in building them.
Set Milestones
We need to have mile markers like in a marathon. What are the milestones of your goal? Plan out dates and add milestones under each date. These milestone achievements must be in your control.
Prioritize the significant actions. You need to learn when you stumble and fall. We need to adapt and change. It is important to focus on progress over perfection.
Building Your Network
There is not a single thing on this planet that everyone likes. It is ok if someone doesn’t like your stuff. Build a community of people who love your stuff.
Who are the people you are going to call when you get stuck? What are the gaps in your network? It is important to identify who is essential.
It is too late to build a network when you need a network. You must start building your network when you begin working toward your goal.
It is important to have accountability coaches.
The idea that you can fit the plan for your goals on just one page is helpful in letting you work on all of your goals.
We thank Sarah for providing a link to her template https://www.sarahglova.com/freedownloads. It will help with planning every one of our goals.
Her entertaining presentation showed us that making the world a better place starts with our goals set out on just one page.
